Kidd Transportation Group Participates in Transit Roundtable
Regional Officials Discuss Future of Public Transportation
April 9, 2009
PENSACOLA, Fla. – On April 7, 2009, Kidd Transportation Group participated in the 2nd Annual Northwest Florida Regional Transit Roundtable, an event which brought together six transit systems to discuss new initiatives for the future of public transportation. Held at the Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition in Pensacola, Fla., the roundtable was hosted by Escambia County Area Transit and the three Transportation Planning Organizations of Northwest Florida, which include Florida-Alabama, Okaloosa-Walton and Bay County, all staffed by the West Florida Regional Planning Council.
Kidd Transportation Group, which serves the marketing needs of the transit industry, attended as marketing council for the event, having worked with many of the entities participating. With the future possibility of linking these transit systems, a topic broadly discussed, communication will be a key concern in sharing service information with the public.
“The key term of the day was ‘intermodal,’” said Tom Derzypolski, VP Client Communications for Kidd Transportation Group. “By creating an intra-county system one day, Bay Town Trolley could eventually reach Escambia County Area Transit through a connecting point.”
Escambia County Commissioner Gene Valentino discussed the Regional Transportation Finance Authority (RFTA) and transit funding potential with attendees. RFTA will be composed of officials from Walton, Escambia, Okaloosa and Santa Rosa Counties, and there is currently a bill up for passage so this body can become a decision-making group, influential to the future of transportation in West Florida.
Among the roundtable attendees were representatives from the Center for Urban Transportation Research, Ride On Commuter Services, Veolia Transportation, the Florida Department of Transportation and elected officials from participating counties and cities. Participants also heard from guest speakers from neighboring Alabama transit systems, Wave Transit of Mobile, and Baldwin Rural Area Transportation Systems of Baldwin County.
